In this episode of Greater Good Radio, Elliot opens up about his Big Island roots, the legacy of his ancestors, the cultural vision behind Aulani, and how his daughter’s simple Christmas wish changed the course of his life. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to succeed in business without losing your soul, this deeply personal and inspiring conversation is for you.

Rooted in Hawai‘i, Raised by Values
Elliot Kawaiho‘olana Mills’ journey begins in a small village on the Hāmākua Coast of Hawai‘i Island, where the values of family, hard work, and humility were woven into daily life. Growing up in Laupāhoehoe, Elliot was shaped by a multigenerational household that deeply influenced his perspective on community, culture, and service. His mother, a dedicated public school teacher, and his grandparents, especially his grandfather who worked the plantations and lived the cowboy lifestyle, were key figures in instilling the principles that continue to guide him today.

It was in these early years—surrounded by ʻohana and connected to the land—that Elliot’s foundation was built. “Where I came from defines who I am,” he says. “My values, my perspective, my sense of kuleana—it all stems from growing up there.”

A Calling Found in Hospitality
Elliot didn’t always envision a career in the hospitality industry. In fact, he started college with plans to become a teacher, following in his mother’s footsteps. But a part-time valet job at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider opened his eyes to the possibilities of the hotel world. He was drawn in by the fast-paced environment, the people, and the meaningful interactions that happen when guests are welcomed with care and sincerity.

That entry-level job led to over 25 years of experience in hospitality, where he climbed the ranks at industry giants like Hyatt, Marriott, and eventually Disney. Throughout his career, Elliot held onto his roots, striving to bring a uniquely Hawaiian sensibility to every role he took on. He often speaks of hospitality not as a business transaction, but as an opportunity to make others feel seen, heard, and cared for.

Building a Cultural Bridge at Aulani
Perhaps the most transformative chapter of Elliot’s career was his 15-year tenure at Disney, where he served as Vice President of Hotel Operations for Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa. At Aulani, Elliot helped craft an experience that wasn't just Hawaiian-themed—but genuinely Hawaiian in spirit and practice.

From creating spaces where only ʻŌlelo Hawai‘i is spoken, to embedding native stories, symbols, and values throughout the resort, Elliot led with intention. Aulani became not only a beloved family destination but also a benchmark for culturally respectful hospitality.

“We had the chance to change the benchmark for how hospitality and culture intersect,” he shared. “We wanted Aulani to be a portal—not just to Hawai‘i’s beauty, but to its heart.”

A Daughter’s Wish Sparks a New Chapter
The shift from executive to entrepreneur was catalyzed by a simple but profound moment: when Elliot asked his daughter what she wanted for Christmas, she replied, “Dad, I just want you to be home.” That wish—made in innocence and love—prompted Elliot to reevaluate his path.

Shortly after, he stepped away from Disney and co-founded Hawaii Hospitality Group, an asset management firm focused on enhancing the value, sustainability, and cultural integrity of resorts and hotels in the islands. His mission is clear: to strengthen the bridge between the hospitality industry and the local communities it serves.

The Deeper Meaning Behind the Name
Elliot’s Hawaiian name, Kawaiho‘olana, means “the waters that run still and deep.” It’s a poetic metaphor that captures both his calm, thoughtful demeanor and his role as a cultural conduit—someone who brings mana, healing, and continuity to the places and people he touches. That symbolism resonates deeply with Elliot, especially as he reflects on his work and legacy.

“We want to create a culture of wellness, of inclusivity, of kuleana,” he says. “Hawai‘i offers a kind of hospitality you can’t find anywhere else. It’s in our spirit, in our history, in the way we give and receive aloha.”

Giving Back Through Service
Elliot’s leadership extends far beyond business. He serves on numerous boards—Kamehameha Schools, Bank of Hawaii, Hawai‘i Pacific Health, and the Hawai‘i Visitors & Convention Bureau—focusing his energy on improving education, health, and opportunities for keiki in underserved communities. His heart remains with Hawai‘i’s future generations, and his efforts are rooted in the belief that business success should always uplift the community.

Final Reflections
From body-surfing the waves off Waipi‘o Valley to boardrooms at Disney, Elliot Mills has never lost sight of who he is and where he came from. His story is a reminder that leadership isn’t about titles or prestige—it’s about service, values, and connection.

In a world that often prizes speed over substance, Elliot moves with the quiet confidence of water—still, deep, and powerful.
